The structure of advising at IOWA mirrors the academic structure of the university. Undergraduate students are generally advised either within a specific college and program or at the Academic Advising Center (AAC).  Since students may declare multiple programs of study, they may be advised both within a particular department and at the AAC.

First-year students at Iowa enroll in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing, Public Health, or Education. Unless directly admitted to a declared program from high school, students start their undergraduate education at the Academic Advising Center.
