Pat Folsom Excellence in Academic Advising Award

UI Advise is pleased to sponsor a campus academic advising award, named in honor of Pat Folsom, who spent 30 years in academic advising at the University of Iowa.

When Pat retired in 2012 from her position as Assistant Provost and Director of the Academic Advising Center, she was a well-respected leader at the University of Iowa and in the advising profession. During her tenure at Iowa, Pat was a fierce advocate for student success, as well as for the role that advisors play in the student experience. Extensively involved in NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, Pat laid the foundation for what academic advising has become on our campus and globally. She was the recipient of the Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy as well as NACADA’s Virginia N. Gordon Award for Excellence in the Field of Advising.

In addition to NACADA conference presentations, Pat was the editor of The New Advisor Guidebook: Mastering the Art of Advising Through the First year and Beyond (2007) and has contributed chapters to Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook (second edition) (2008), Comprehensive Advisor Training and Development: Practices that Deliver (2010), and Academic Advising Administration: Essential Knowledge and Skills for the 21st Century (2011). Pat’s extensive NACADA experience also included serving on the NACADA Board of Directors. The lasting impact of Pat’s work remains evident at the University of Iowa and in the global advising community.
